Location: House (New Addition)

After doing some research and watchin Romantic films I have noticed that a lot of the films take place mainly at their homes. Due to this I feel that a new location we could use is a house. This could be the main setting for the Romance film.

A home is the heart of the family, it is a good romantic setting as many different scenes could take place in the house. It is also an easy place for us to shoot our film as the wearther conditions wont get in the way of us filming. It is also safer for us to film inside the house as their wont be as many health and saftey risks.

Below are some photos from 'Home' magazine that I got off of Google. These could potentially inspire us for our set design.

CNN News: Extra

On Thursday 14th March, CNN News came over to the UK from the United States of America to interview our school's Performing Arts Department about a new project that we are currently doing in collaboration with The V&A Museum to do with David Bowie. Inbetween the filming we had time to talk to CNN News. I took this time to talk to them about how they film and edit all their clips and how they break a 30 minuet film down into 2 minuets. During this time I was able to ask them some about shooting our opening sequence.

What is a Treatment?

A treatment is needed to sell the story it explains in deapth the context of the opening sequence. It  is a two to five page document that tells the whole of story focusing on the highlights. This should read like a short story and be written in the present tense. It should present the entire story including the ending.

What Should Be in the Treatment?

  1. The film title
  2. The writer's name and contact information
  3. A short logline
  4. Introduction to key characters
  5. Who, what, when, why and where.
  6. Act 1 in one to three paragraphs. Act 1 also refered to as the set up, should set the scene, introduce the characters, and should introduce the main conflicts.
  7. Act 2 in two to six paragraphs. Act 2 also refered to as the conflict, is where the conflict begins and expans until it reaches a crisis.
  8. Act 3 in one to three paragraphs. Act 3 also refered to as the resolution is where the coflict rises to one more crisis and then gets resolved.

Character Profile: Nancy

Nancy is one of the Main characters in my film. She is first introduced in the opening sceen. Nancy is the wife of Will who dies at battle. We first see Nancy when Raife delivers the sad news. Nancy would need to be strong actor who again conveys strong realistic emotions. She needs to have a strong on screen presance and be a good looking female.

Character Profile: Will

Will is the husband of Nancy who dies in battle. We do not see Will much in the film, however his voice plays a huge part in the mental breakdown of his wife. Raife is only seen in the middle of the film when Nancy has flashbacks of her husband. When casting Will it will be more about the voice of the actor than the look. The voice would need to be strong and the actor would need a large vocal range.

Character Profile: Raife

Raife is the main character in my film. In the film Raife is the character who deliveres the news to Nancy that her husband has died in battle. In the opening sequence Raife is introduced to the audiance. In my film I would like the actor who is casted at Raife to be able to convey strong emotions and to have a strong body build to fulfill the steriotypical soilder. He would have to be handsome and tall.

Location: Greenwich

Greenwich is another location where I would like scenes of my film shot. Greenwich is one of Londons biggest landmarks and is famous all over the world. It is notable for its maratime history and is the site of the Royal Palace, The Palace of Placentia. I feel that due to the fact that our film is set during the Irag War I feel that Greenwich is a great loaction becouse of the history is has with past Wars.

Greenwich is a very smart area and the buildings are built well and look elegant. I feel that this would be a great location for our film as i feel that many of the sites in Greenwich would work well with the romantic genre of our film. Greenwich has a lot of small cobble streets and I think these streets would work well.

There are many landmarks in Greenwich that would make great establishing shots for the film. Some of these locations are The Royal Observatory, The Royal Navy College, and Greenwich University. These are a few of the famous iconic buildings.

Location: London

One of my ideas for a location in the film is London. The reason for this is that London is a capital city and is one of the most famous cities in the world. London is also quiet a romantic city and I feel that we may be able to get some effective shots of the romantic sceens in the small streets of London.

The Image to the left is a good setting for a romantic film. It is night time and the street lamps are lighting up the streets. With the noise of the water crashing against the walls I feel that this could set a very effective romantic scene.
The Image to the Right is a wide shot of the River themes. This shot is very iconic and is a very strong  establishing shot! Most people today would recognise where this photo is taken. I feel that this would make a great backdrop to one of the romantic scenes as it has three big iconic buildings in the image. The London Eye, Big Ben and The Houses of Parliment. At a night time when it is all lite up it really gives a feel of romance and I feel that this will be a great location.

Location & Casting

Location

The location of the film is vitally important to the tone of the genre of my film. Every director would say that a location could break or make the project. A location is the main aspect of the film that creates the world we all escape to when sitting in the cinema. When choosing my location I need to do a lot of location research so that I have as much information and details about the location as possible. If I don't do my location research there could be a lot of things that could potentially hamper the shooting of my film. When doing my location research their are a lot of aspects that I need to research about. Things I need to consider when choosing my Location:

Are you legally allowed to film where you want to film?
Are there any other access restrictions? (Dates, times, permissions etc.)
Is it safe to film here?
Is it physically possible to achieve what you want to achieve at this location?
Does it suit the genre of the film?
Is it interesting enough?
Will lighting be an issue?
Is it a public thoroughfare?
Is there a lot of road traffic nearby?
Will noise be an issue?

Casting

Casting is a vital part of when it comes to shooting my film. I need to cast strong actors who fit the character profiles I create and who have a strong way of showing their emotions. They need to have a strong on screen presence which can catch the audiences emotion. The actor needs to be the right character for the role. Actors often leave a lasting impression on the audience and if an actor who usually stars in romantic films all of a sudden stars in an action film it doesn't seem right to the audience. When casting my film i need to consider the following:

Screen Testing?
Looks?
Age?
Gender?
Style?
Voice?
Availability?
Reliability?
Wage?
Ability?
Versatility?

What is a 25 Word Pitch?

Production Context: Company Logo

Being an Independent Film Company we need to design a logo that is easily recognisable, this is becouse our company will be less know that the big Hollywood companies and so we need something that will stand out to the audiances and will have an everlasting effect on them.

We need a logo that will be simple, elegent, and that will stand out to the audiance. Here are a few examples of logos from different fields of companies that I think are effective.

All these Logos are very plain and simple, but in my opinion the are more effective to the audiacne.

AS Media: Influences

Genre Influences
Action, Crime, Drama, Romance:

Action: Iron Man, Skyfall, The Avengers, Inception,

Crime: Identity Thief, Fast and Furious, Drive

Drama: Titanic, Silver Linings Playbook, Forrest Gump

Romance/ Comedy: The Hangover, Ted, Bridesmaids,

Opening Sequence (Titles) Influences

Style/ Look Influences

The opening scene on 'The Player' has one long tracking shot which makes the whole scene flow a lot more. It is one continuous shot that makes the camera work look very technical. The long shot allows all the main character to be introduced in the first few minuets of the film. In a way you could say that it is and establishing shot as it shows the audiance the entire surrounding.

'Children of men' also uses many long shots in the film. I think these shots are very effective and make the film flow a lot more. The long tracking shots give a more realistic sense of time and urgency. Children of men has been regarded to have some of the best cinematography of all time. In my opinion the style of how this film was shot is my favorite.

Production Context

I need to think about which production company I want to use to make my film. I need to decide whether I want it to be a Blockbuster Company or a Independent Film Company.

Ideally I would like my film to be made by a large blockbuster company like Universal. Blockbluster films genuinely produce a higher profit due to larger budgets. This is because they can distribute the money between Production, Performance and Distribution. Independent Movies are not funded as much. This means they cant advertise the movie as much as a big blockbuster film and so don't have as big of share of the markets audience. Due to the fact that i'm only making a two minuet film I feel that it is unrealistic to be with a blockbuster company, so therefore I think it is more appropriate to go with an independent company.

By choosing an Independent Film Company to produce my film. I will be able to portray a more realistic film to the audiance. After researching many Independent film companies and having numerous conversations with my group. We have decided to choose the production company Fosterfilm Productions. Fosterfilm Productions began in Texas in 2006 and in 2010 it expanded to Los Angeles. I have chosen Fosterfilm Productions because it specialises in short films. Although I have chosen against a big Hollywood blockbuster company, I still want my film to be targeted at a larger audience of Americans and not just UK citizens! I want this because it will generate a larger profit for the company. I think that we have a strong enough story line to attract a wider audience and feel that we can compete in the US Short Film market.

I feel that I can compete in the US film market as due to research I know that Americans like British actors and like British Romance films such as Atonement (2007), produced by Universal Pictures, Studio Canal, Relatively Media and Working Title Films.

Mood-board

This Mood-board is represents the Romance genre. Many of the images and words displayed in this Mood-board are represenations of Romance. The colours in my Mood-Board are mainly red, and pink as these are the main colours assosiated with Love. I choose to put an image of the Titanic poster in my Mood-board as in my opinion this is one of the most famous and most memerable on screen relationships I have seen. I choose a picture of the Eiffel Tower as it is situated in Paris and Paris is know as the city of Love. The chocoalte and red roses represent Valentines day as these are often gifts that the man gives to the woman showing that he loves her. I have also choosen two pictures of couples sitting on the beech, as in my opinion most newly-wed couples take their honneymoons in exotic places.
